    Congo to begin Ebola vaccinations on Monday: Health ministry

    Abidjan: Health workers in Democratic Republic of Congo will begin a vaccination campaign on Monday aimed at containing an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus, a spokeswoman for the health ministry said on Sunday.

    Jessica Ilunga said that 4,000 doses of vaccine were shipped on Saturday to the city of Mbandaka, which last week registered its first cases of the disease in an urban area since the outbreak was declared earlier this month.


    Palestinian leader Abbas in hospital for third time in a week: Officials

    Ramallah: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been hospitalized in a West Bank hospital, a Palestinian official said on Saturday, providing no further details on his condition.

    It was the third time Abbas, 82, had been hospitalized in a week. He underwent minor ear surgery on Tuesday and was released a few hours later and hospitalized briefly again on Friday, the official Palestinian news agency WAFA said.


    Pope Francis to nominate 14 new cardinals on June 29

    Milan: Pope Francis said on Sunday he would elevate 14 Roman Catholic prelates to the high rank of cardinal, the elite group of churchmen who are his closest advisers and can enter a conclave to choose his successor if they are under 80.

    The pope made the surprise announcement during his weekly Sunday address. He said the ceremony to elevate the nominees, known as a consistory, would take place on June 29.


    Syrian Observatory: Islamic State fighters leaving last Damascus enclave

    Beirut: The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a group of Islamic State fighters had been evacuated from the last insurgent enclave near Damascus on Sunday in a withdrawal that will restore state control over the area. 

    On Saturday, a Syrian military source denied that any agreement had been reached between the Syrian army and the Islamic State militants who have been holed up in the enclave centred around the Yarmouk Camp south of the capital.  Syrian state media made no mention of a withdrawal by Islamic State fighters on Sunday.


    Saudi Arabia releases 1,000 Ethiopian prisoners

    Addis Ababa: Saudi Arabia has agreed to release 1,000 Ethiopian nationals who have been in prison in the Gulf state for a variety of offences, Ethiopian state affiliated media said.  

    The agency said among the detainees were 100 women. It did not disclose what the charges were. Hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian nationals live in the Gulf region, mostly in Saudi Arabia.  Officials in Riyadh are in the process of deporting more than 500,000 illegal Ethiopian migrants. So far, 160,000 have arrived back in the Horn of Africa country.
